A BIT OF HISTORY
What is a Cooper?
A cooper is a person trained in the craft of making wooden vessels such as barrels, casks, vats, troughs, buckets, and tubs. These vessels are usually created with timber staves, heated to make them more pliable. They are held together with metal hoops, and the fl at ends are commonly known as barrel heads. Prior to the mid-20th century, the cooper’s trade flourished in the United States and around the world, however, these days the trade of master cooper is dwindling.
Currently, most coopers operate barrel-making machinery and assemble casks for the wine and spirits industry. Now the staves are heated not only to make them easier to bend, but also to slightly toast the interior of the staves. This toasting imparts certain flavors over time to the contents for the wine or spirits that the barrels will contain.
